Mallory Franklin has missed out on a medal in the women’s canoe final on day five of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The 30-year-old, who qualified for the final sixth fastest, finished 12th after a promising start.
Mallory was up on the then leader Elena Lilik, from Germany, at the first split before picking up a penalty on gate 7.
Sadly, despite rallying back into contention, further penalties including a late missed gate saw Franklin finish with a time of 165.15.
The Tokyo 2020 silver medallist and 2023 women’s canoe world champion, will now look forward to the women's kayak cross event, on Friday.
“I know I had the pace, but I've been struggling all year to put that together and keep it clean and get a good delivery,” said Franklin.
“I was really hoping I could get it down today and maybe put it all together when it really mattered.
“I wasn't able to and that's really sad but I'm frustrated that I was capable of the medal but wasn't able to put it down today.
“I've got kayak cross to go. I will have a day off and get some head space to reset before hitting the kayak cross.
“It's a tough course. I think there's quite a bit of in it. You've seen two really good runs in that final and I think that's impressive.
“It wasn't meant to be.
“It's a tough one to take as I think I was capable of getting that medal today but I'll just reset and come back and fight for the rest of the Games.
“I knew I was good at the top. It's been tough to settle into 6/7. I struggled through it but for me, it was trying to deliver a good run.
“I'm happy I was sat on the start-line and I kept fighting the whole way down.”
Australia's Jessica Fox won gold, Lilik took silver and 20-year-old US paddler Evy Leibfarth the bronze.
Mallory, who is coached by double Olympic silver medalist Richard Hounslow, at Lee Valley White Water Centre, qualified in sixth for the final with a time of 111.62.
Had she avoided six seconds of penalties, Mallory would have topped the leaderboard jointly with Gabriela Satkova, of the Czech Republic.
Mallory will be back in action in the kayak cross, which starts with the time trials on Friday 2 August.
Next up for Team GB is Joe Clarke, who will be competing in the men's individual kayak at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium tomorrow afternoon – Thursday 1 August.
