Canoe Sprint is an exciting Olympic sport that showcases speed and power on flat water. It involves paddlers racing against each other over distances ranging from 200 to 1000 metres. Races take place on calm water, with up to nine boats competing side by side in separate lanes.
Equipment and Boat Types
Competitors use sleek, narrow boats designed for speed:
- Kayaks (K): Paddled with a double-bladed paddle
- Canoes (C): Paddled with a single-bladed paddle
There are three main differences between the canoes and kayaks:
Seating position:
- In kayaks, paddlers sit with legs extended
- In canoes, paddlers kneel
Paddle type:
- Kayaks use double-bladed paddles
- Canoes use single-bladed paddles
Design:
- Kayaks have a closed deck
- Canoes have an open deck
Race Distances
The main Olympic events include the following distances:
- 200m: Explosive sprints
- 500m: A balance of speed and endurance

Getting Involved
The UK has a thriving Canoe Sprint scene with a range of events taking place across the year. These include:
- Local regattas for beginners
- National competitions in Nottingham
- Pathways to Olympic representation
Having reached the minimum standard, competitors are categorised by a variety of age and gender groupings, such as Men, Women, Boys (under 18) and Girls (under 18), and within each category an ability ranking of A, B, C or D, with D being the slowest.
In addition to these are the Mini Sprint Series for U12's and the Intermediate Series for U14's. In all competitions progression through the ranks is based on time.
There are generally four British National regattas across the year, usually in April, June, July and September. These are held on the regatta course at the National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepont in Nottingham, each one over a weekend.
