Event Description

What it’s all about

The purpose of this open day is to provide an opportunity for people with disabilities to get out onto the water and experience the fun of paddlesports in an inclusive and accessible environment.

This session is the second part of a day-long event, where coaches, instructors, volunteers and leaders will have taken part in a CPD session on how to support disabled people to paddle, how to adapt their delivery to support the needs of disabled people, and make their delivery more inclusive. The Open Paddle Event is an opportunity for those who attended the morning session to continue their development journey, and put their learnings into practice.

Who should attend

As a specific opportunity open to disabled paddlers aged 18 and over, anyone with a disability is welcome to attend this event.

There is no need to have had any previous experience of paddling but you will need to have a good level of water confidence (non-swimming participants should be confident in the water, not panic and be able to follow instructions in the event of a capsize). Activity will be taking place on sheltered, slow moving water, with lots of friendly instructors making sure you’re having a great time!

What to expect from the session

All the sessions will be supported by experienced instructors. Activity will take place in/on kayaks and Stand Up Paddleboards.

All kit is provided by the centre, however you will need to please bring:

  • Appropriate swimming clothing as you will wear this underneath your wetsuit.
  • If you are not wearing a wetsuit, then you can wear shorts/gym leggings / t shirt. You must be suitably covered, bikinis or bare chests are not allowed.
  • ALL participants MUST bring shoes that can get wet. These can be old trainers or watersports shoes, must be secure and must be closed toe.

Key things to note:

  • The venue does not have access to a hoist, but staff will be on hand to assist with access onto the water.
  • Accessible parking is available at the rear of the centre.
  • The slipway is usable, there are mats down to help with potential slickness.
  • There are three accessible toilets, two with showers which are downstairs, one is upstairs without a shower.
  • There is a hearing loop at the centre.
  • The venue does not have a changing bed but they do have a first aid bed if needed.
