Event Description

What it’s all about

The purpose of the workshop is to provide an opportunity for coaches and club members to learn more about supporting paddlers with disabilities, the challenges disabled people face, help understand more about different types of impairments, and how to make your club environment more inclusive. The workshop will delivered by Claire Buckle, an ex-Paralympian, and there will be plenty of opportunity to share ideas and examples of good practice in the inclusion of disabled people into sport.

The workshop will be followed by an afternoon of taster sessions for people with disabilities to get out onto the water, allowing for a more practical level of engagement between the coaches, leaders, volunteers with paddlers. 

Who should attend

The morning is open to coaches, or anyone from a club with an interest in knowing more about how to make their club more inclusive. There is also an opportunity for volunteers to attend who do not have a water sports qualification but are interested in gaining a qualification and joining a club in the future. We also encourage disabled people to attend.

Please note: though not a criteria to attend, those people who do not have a water sport qualification can only observe and assist in the afternoon practical.

Structure and content of morning

The morning workshop will be three hours in duration and will cover areas such as;

• Definition of disability and characteristics of disability (visual impairment, hearing impairment, neurological conditions, learning impairment)
• Terminology
• Examples of disabilities
• Practical delivery session to implement new knowledge
• The law – Disability Hate Crime, Equality Act overview
• Question and Answer Session

We are situated in the heart of Salford Quays meaning there are a number of different transport links to and from the centre.

 

By tram

There are 4 stops nearby, please visit the Transport for Greater Manchester website to plan your visit.

By bus

There are bus stops close by to the centre too, follow routes for the Lowry Outlet Mall.

 

By car

From the M60 take Junction 12 for the M602, exit at Junction 3 and follow the sign posts for The Quays. The Watersports Centre is located at 15 The Quays, next to The Beefeater Pub. Free on-site parking is available.

Parking

We have a car park located at the back of our building. The majority of the time, the barrier will be down. If you are booked onto a session, please press the buzzer on the barrier and wait for a member of our team to speak with you. Just say your name and session and we’ll let you in 🙂 Parking here is free and you do not have to register your vehicle. If our car park is full or not in use, you can park at the ‘Whitbread’ car park for FREE which is next door by the beefeater pub. If you park here, you MUST come to our reception and scan the QR code which is located at reception. This will take you to a page where you register your car for that visit.

 

We do not own or control this car park so please ensure you follow the above steps and register your car, make sure your phone has a QR scanner built in. Failure to do so may result in a fine.
