Event Description

Brits ’24 – The British Isles Championships of Surf Kayak and Waveski 2024

Paddlers from across the British Isles will come together to compete to be crowned British Champion in High Performance, Long Boat and Waveski categories. This year the event comes to Cayton Bay, North Yorkshire and the local area,  running over a new three day format.

Whether competing at this level for the first time or a seasoned competitor, this event should have something for paddlers beyond competing.

——————————————————————————————————————————-

Age Groups and Categories:
There are opportunities to enter High Performance, Long and Waveski categories. For the initial round of entries we have opened up Open and Female categories in each craft for Juniors, New Age, Open (all ages above 12), Masters, Grand Masters and Veterans. Please note, that the age ranges listed within the entry systems are abbreviations only. If you are on the cusp (at either top or bottom) of any age group please refer to the WSKA definitions which can be found at https://wska.org/download/ – “Competition Rules 2024”.

How to enter:
Use the ticket navigation on the top right of the page (as viewed in a web browser) to select whether you require a junior or adult entry. Please note, juniors benefit from discounted rates. Any adults attempting to register as juniors to benefit from these rates will be disqualified and their entry fee forfeit.

  • Select 1 ticket entry only.
  • Select your home nation NGB affiliation and populate the rest of the forms, paying special attention to medical declarations, next of kin etc… The cover-fee for juniors is £10 and the cover-fee for adults is £15.
  • Select your categories. Competitors can register for 2 categories only in the initial entry window. Juniors can enter categories for £15 per category. For adults it’s £25 per category. These costs contribute to judging, prizes etc…
  • Once submitted this populates your shopping cart. The checkout button is in the top right of your shopping cart confirmation, above your order.
  • Proceed to payment and you’re done. You’ll receive a short confirmation email and then expect to hear from us in due course with more event details and updates.

Entries will close on 5th September. They will open again shortly after for additional category entries and late entries.
Before 5th September you can benefit from a discounted event t-shirt at just £6. Subsequent to that t-shirts may be unavailable or will need to be charged at full rate.

Full terms and conditions are available from the entry form. Please familiarise yourself with these.

Please note, juniors (under 18s) must be accompanied by a responsible adult for the duration of the event.

About the venue and area:
Cayton Bay and the beaches in and around Scarborough are well positioned to pick up swells from the North Sea. The prevailing wind direction is offshore. Whilst the planned main venue is Cayton Bay there are a number of other beaches within 15 minutes providing slightly different aspects and improving our chances or running a competition in quality surf. With a resurgent community of surf kayakers and waveski riders, North Yorkshire provides a venue as near to the centre of the UK as we can make it and an opportunity to showcase the sport to a fresh audience.

Cayton Bay itself provides waves that work at all states of the tide and vary in character as the waters advance and recede. On site, there is a small local surf shop, toilet facilities and a small kiosk style cafe. Parking is available in the surf school/shop car park close to short path to the beach. Quiet overnight camping is available at the venue for those in vans.

As with all surf events, we are at the mercy of the weather. However, by picking an Autumn date we have dramatically improved our chances of getting quality surf within the competition window. A decision whether or not to run will be made prior to the competition and circulated by Wednesday 23rd at the latest.

Accommodation options:
In addition to the camping available at the venue, there are many places to stay in the Scarborough area. North Yorkshire council has supplied a list of potentially suitable options for a variety of budgets. This is available on request.

Further information:

How the event will run:

The event will be run to World Surf Kayak Association rules. These can be found at www.wska.org and include boat specification, judging criteria, age categories etc. In particular, all boats must have flotation bag(s) or full foam, and end-tapes. Helmets and buoyancy aids must be worn throughout all kayak heats. Waveski paddlers must wear helmets, but BAs are not compulsory if a leash is worn. The event is planned to run over 3 days in order to offer either the maximum number of categories possible and/or enable us to make the best of local conditions.

Categories will be seeded based upon results from last World Championships and/or last British Championships. This will be conducted on a best endeavours basis.

This event follows the Paddle UK Competition Gender Policy.

Cancellations:

Competitors may cancel their entry and receive a full refund until 6 weeks prior to the event. Subsequent to that no refunds will be made. In the event that the competition is postponed entries fees will be retained for an alternate date. In circumstances where a competitor cannot make the alternate date a refund will be provided following deductions of any unrecoverable costs. |

The event reserves the right to cancel, consolidate or amalgamate categories in circumstances where there are insufficient entries or for scheduling purposes. In circumstances where a competitor is already entered in a category into which their other event is amalgamated, a refund will be provided.  Consolidation is anticipated to run as follows:
Open Classes – Here when an age Class is cancelled with entries of 1 or 2 people, they will be moved down an age group. For example Grand Master cancellation will see remaining entries moved into Master. Women Classes. Those affected will be given a choice to move either down an age class -OR – into the Equivalent Open Class (if running).
